Organizational Unit Overview The Department of Chemistry currently has 27 full-time faculty members with interests that span the traditional fields of chemistry (analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical) with numerous cross-cutting collaborations with faculty from the Departments of Biology, Physics, Psychology, and the Brody School of Medicine. We are a student-centered department that offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Chemistry), two Bachelor of Science degrees (B.S. Chemistry and B.S. Biochemistry (Chemistry Concentration)), a Masters of Science degree, and a Doctoral Program (Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Biology, Biomedicine, and Chemistry). The Department of Chemistry has about 200 majors currently, graduating 256 B.A. Chemistry, 104 B.S. Chemistry, 27 B.S. Biochemistry, 48 M.S. Chemistry and 4 PhD candidates between 2016-2021. The department has a strong history of high-quality teaching and mentoring, recognized with numerous teaching awards, and a strong profile in professional development, workforce development and best educational practices.

In a continuing effort to enrich its academic environment and provide equal educational and employment opportunities for all, the Department actively encourages members from all groups underrepresented in higher education to submit applications. In addition to the above-mentioned ADI and CUREs, the department has multiple initiatives shown to improve access and student success for our diverse student body. The department utilizes Undergraduate Learning adjuncts and Undergraduate Teaching adjuncts, shown to improve access, attitudes towards science, presentation expertise and content expertise. The department is moving to the Chemistry, Life, the Universe and Everything ( CLUE ) curriculum this fall, shown to impact student success. Our NSF Research practices for Undergraduates brings a diverse group of students to campus which expands the perspectives of our current students. A newly named Distinguished Professor will make broader community outreach a focus of her efforts.

Job tasks The Department of Chemistry at East Carolina University seeks applications to fill a position as a Teaching Instructor, Senior Teaching Instructor, Teaching adjunct Professor, or Teaching Associate Professor (as appropriate to practice and qualifications) beginning on August 15, 2022. This fixed-term faculty position is for the 2022-2023 academic year, with the possibility of subsequent appointments.

ECU Chemistry is already an innovative department, utilizing the Argument Driven Inquiry instructional (ADI) model, and offering multiple sections of Course-located Undergraduate Research practices (CUREs); come help us get even better!

The faculty member's primary tasks will be teaching in the general chemistry and/or organic chemistry sequences. Reassigned time will be offered for the faculty member to coordinate the scheduling, assignment/training/supervision of graduate student instructors, assignment/training/supervision of undergraduate teaching adjuncts, and setup/delivery of over sixty lab courses per semester. Service expectations of this individual will be related to assessment and revision of laboratory curriculum in collaboration with the Undergraduate Program Committee.

The prosperous applicant will be someone who is collaborative and enjoys working in partnership with faculty, staff, and teaching adjuncts to deliver a high-quality educational practice to ECU students; safety-minded by ensuring all environmental health and laboratory regulations are carefully followed; conscientious by conserving chemicals and reagents to maximize budgetary resources; and a dedicated leader, providing mentorship and encouragement to all emerging scientists.

Minimum Education/practice Minimum qualifications for appointment as a Teaching Instructor or Senior Teaching Instructor include a MS in Chemistry or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution. Minimum qualifications for appointment as a Teaching adjunct Professor or Teaching Associate Professor include a PhD in Chemistry or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation None

Preferred practice, expertise, Training/Education Preferred qualifications for the position include: (a) a Ph.D. in Chemistry or closely related field, (b) practice in coordination of General Chemistry or Organic Chemistry laboratories, and demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring.
