Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical GardensPart-time Aquarist IFor candidates seeking initial City employment, in conformity with Los Angeles City Ordinance 187134, information regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements as conditions of employment may be found at: https://clkrep.lacity.org/onlinedocs/2021/21-0921_ord_187134_8-24-21.pdfPosition title: Part-time AquaristPosition function: Life Support Systems OperatorFacility: Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical GardensJob location: Los Angeles, CAJob Summary: Operation of Life Support Systems all over the zoo, equipment maintenance and repair, and basic water quality testing.Other tasks and Job responsibilities: Understand water chemistry reports and their relationship to Life Support, work closely with Animal Care staff and Construction staff, perform inspections, preventative maintenance tasks, cleaning and repair of all Life Support equipment.expertise, expertise and Abilities: expertise of pumps (centrifugal and peristaltic), filters (sand, bead, drum), UV sterilizers, ozone generators, and automated control systems. Water quality in aquariums. PVC plumbing. expertise and capability to use power tools.Education Preferred: Bachelor's degree in biological sciences preferred.Licenses and Certifications Preferred: Open Water SCUBA certification from an internationally recognized training association preferred. Level 1 Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators (AALSO) certification preferred.Physical Requirements: Able to move/lift 75 pounds, climb ladders, work in tight areas, ride a bicycle.Working Conditions: Both indoor and outdoor in typical Southern California weather.Further Comments*This is a civil service exempt, at-will position. The incumbent will not accrue any civil service tenure or contractual rights in such position. All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for employment and have received a conditional job offer from the Los Angeles Zoo will be required to complete a criminal background investigation which includes fingerprinting.
