Position Summary The OSU Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Extension program seeks applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term adjunct Professor of Practice position in the Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Supervision Team (Eastern Regional Director, Department Head, and Program Leader).

The adjunct Professor of Practice position is stationed with a main office in Baker City, Oregon and will serve Baker and Union Counties. Office space would also be provided in Union County. Its academic home is the Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University. Active contributions to scholarship are required (see the scholarship tasks section, below, for details).

This position contributes to the mission of the College of Agricultural Sciences, with principal responsibility for needs assessment, Extension program development, delivery, and evaluation, and for conducting applied research needed to support Extension activities.

This faculty position is responsible for the Rangeland/Forage/Livestock Extension program in Baker and Union Counties. This faculty member will provide leadership abilities in teaching, communication, and programming for rangeland, livestock, forage and natural resources using research-located information. This faculty member will provide Extension and applied research programming for Livestock and Natural Resources in Baker and Union counties, as well as participate in statewide and regional activities, as appropriate.

Position tasks This faculty member embeds the commitment of OSU Extension Service to a collaborative and inclusive community in all interactions and tasks performed. This individual will ensure that educational programs and outreach activities serve diverse populations, including those that have been historically marginalized/excluded from participation. Our program objective is to create opportunities for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and these activities will be included in the annual plan of work, impact statements, and summary of accomplishments/achievements.

80% - Extension Teaching, Applied Research and Other Assignments


Coordinate or design/implement/deliver/evaluate livestock production and natural resource management Extension programs and materials as well as support for pasture management and forages related to livestock production in Baker and Union counties and other areas as appropriate which will require frequent travel between counties and occasionally all over the state.

Work cooperatively with Extension State faculty, Department Heads, and other faculty and staff to provide instruction, teach, or deliver the above Extension programs and materials, and to maintain contact with producer groups.

Respond to or refer routine phone, correspondence, and walk-in questions regarding livestock production and natural resource management, forages and pasture management in Baker and Union counties. This will include working with forage grain and potato producers as appropriate and in partnership with Crops Faculty assigned to the area; and providing information on forage seeding, grazing, weed control, riparian enhancement, and coping with regulatory concerns.

Provide technical support and programming related to livestock and natural resources to youth faculty and staff in support of the annual county fair and livestock show (e.g., helping administer beef carcass evaluation and helping implement livestock judging contests).

Participate in-group activities with other Extension agriculture faculty including, but not limited to, assisting with pesticide applicator re-certification training and support for local clientele.

Conduct needs-assessment activities to determine the Extension needs of target program participants and develop programs to meet those needs on a regional basis.

Network and cooperate with subject matter specialist, other faculty, other agencies and agricultural professionals to provide program support.

Meet the information needs of local and regional audiences by accessing information from a variety of sources and disseminating through appropriate mechanisms (web, newsletter, newspaper, radio, television, internet, presentations, etc.).

Utilize appropriate and effective methods of communication to promote programs and market Extension.

Develop demonstration sites and an applied research program that supports extension programming.

Keep records and provide necessary reports to Extension Administration, including plans of work, narrative reports, statistical reports, and reports of accomplishment.

Participate in professional development opportunities that enhance the Extension programming capacities of animal sciences programs.

Attend appropriate OSU training to maintain subject matter skills.

Maintain active membership in appropriate professional organizations e.g., American Society of Animal Science, Society for Range Management, and National Association of County Ag Agents.

Present at producer/rancher and other clientele meetings like the SWCA, County weeds groups, BLM, USFWS, ODFW, Sage-grouse Local Implementation Team (LIT) meetings, and county-located cattle producer meetings.

Work with OSU range/livestock/beef working groups to help them develop proposals that can attract extramural grant funds to support the Extension programs.

10% - Scholarly results


Assigned tasks for this position are expected to result in scholarly results. Scholarly and creative work is intellectual work whose significance is validated by peers and that is communicated. Emphasis in scholarship should be placed on results that recognize activities as a professional practitioner in community settings as defined by the incumbent's position description.

To achieve promotion, scholarship for this position must include peer reviewed materials that are durable and findable in the web environment. These are typically of the two types shown below but as our communication worlds change, other types of scholarship may fit these durcapability and findable criteria:

· Publications in peer-reviewed journals which might encompass description and evaluation of novel community-located professional practice or research application, program development and innovation, results of innovative programs and/or services, definitive professional practice reviews, or case reports among others.

· Authorship of Extension publications, local or regional ?practice? publications, book chapters, other educational materials and electronic information delivery media if Information technology is either peer reviewed before dissemination or if there is evidence of its adoption and use by peers.

To achieve promotion, there must be an on-going record that both of these types of scholarship are being done though each does not need to be present in every year of record. Documentation must also be provided that shows these scholarly outputs have had impact.

These durable, web-findable materials may be augmented by other forms of peer validation such as the following:

· Invited presentations, poster and podium presentations, and published abstracts and/or proceedings at state, regional and national levels, provided that evidence of peer validation is provided.
· Documented impact due to local or regional adoption of improved practices, methods, or programs.
· Secured competitive grants and contracts appropriate for the scope and focus of the faculty member's position.
· Named inventor of a protected intellectual property in the faculty member's field.
· Recognition as a professional practitioner in community settings as demonstrated by
o Honorary degrees
o Awards recognizing community, professional and/or scientific achievements
o Fellowships in national professional and/or scientific organizations
o Requests to serve as a technical advisor to government agencies, industry, or professional groups

5% - Organizational Accountcapability


Utilize technology as a tool to increase the impact of program delivery on constituents including participating with Ask-an-Expert (Ask Extension).

Use multiple methods of electronic communication (i.e. web sites, publications, video conferencing and other online methods) to collaborate internally and externally as appropriate.

Implement fee-located programming and cost-recovery practices, develop partnerships, and solicit external funding to support and enhance Extension programs as appropriate.

Organize and maintain program advisory and management committees or networks to identify program needs, make recommendations, assist in program implementation, and evaluate program effectiveness.

Develop an annual plan of work covering educational needs as well as evaluate the quality and impact of Extension programs provided to audiences as appropriate.

Provide community and statewide opinion leaders and decision makers the context and knowledge of how your program work relates to overall Extension programming output.

Pursue engagement opportunities that may include, but are not limited to the creation of internal and external partnerships; identification of community and educational needs; etc.

Outputs and impacts of efforts to promote equity, inclusion, and diversity should be included in promotion dossiers.

Participate in leadership abilities training opportunities that builds skills around equity, inclusion, and diversity.

5% - Service


Serve as an effective team member in the OSU Extension Baker and Union County offices.

Minimum/Required Qualifications Master's degree in Animal Sciences, Rangeland Sciences, or closely related field. Master's degree must be completed by January 1, 2022.

Demonstrated knowledge of livestock production in an arid and semi-arid environment.

Demonstrated practice teaching/delivering education programs in formal or non-formal settings.

Demonstrated written and oral communication skills including the effective use of electronic (traditional and web-located) and printed mass media.
General capability to use common computers, including proficiency with information technology, web sites and social media.

Must have or be able to obtain an Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License within six months of employment and maintain Information technology all over employment.
