Organizational Unit Overview The Brody School of Department at East Carolina University (ECU) is composed of 18 departments which function to: 1) provide health care for the citizens of eastern North Carolina; 2) educate primary care physicians to meet the health care needs of eastern North Carolina; and 3) make medical education available to minority and underprivileged people. The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences is a primary contributor to the School's mission of medical education, patient care, research, and The Brody School of Department at East Carolina University (ECU) is composed of 18 departments which function to: 1) provide health care for the citizens of eastern North Carolina; 2) educate primary care physicians to meet the health care needs of eastern North Carolina; and 3) make medical education available to minority and underprivileged people. The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences (herein referred to as Cardiovascular Sciences or CVS) is the university's newest department, and is a primary contributor to the School's mission of medical education, patient care, research, and community service.

Playing an important function in the Brody School of Department's academic group practice, the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences consists of the Department Chairman, two Medical Directors of Clinical Services, four leadership abilities core units (Department Administrator, CVS Operations Committee/Section Chiefs, Nurse Administrator, and Vice Chairman and Director of Research), and seven clinical and educational divisions. The primary functions of education (students, residents, fellows and continuing medical education), clinical services (Structural Heart Disease, Electrophysiology & Arrhythmias, Heart Failure, Primary and Secondary avoidance, and Vascular Diseases), research (clinical and basic bench research in cardiovascular clinical care, clinical trials to develop new treatments for cardiovascular disease, educational programs for local, regional, and national health care providers, and wellness and avoidance programs), academic affairs/faculty development, and administration (business and clinical support services) are led by the Department Chairman and CVS Operations Committee. The clinical sections represented in Cardiovascular Diseases include: Structural Heart Disease, Electrophysiology & Arrhythmias, Heart Failure, Primary and Secondary avoidance, and Vascular Diseases. There are currently 37 MD and PhD faculty members, 15 Fellows, and 16 Physician Extenders and Cardiovascular Sciences Technicians.

A clinical, administrative, and research support staff numbering nearly 100 CSS and SPA employees provides support to the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences' faculty and learner groups. Subspecialty fellows (fully trained internists receiving training in a clinical subspecialty within Cardiovascular Sciences and Internal Department) currently number fifteen.
The majority of the department's educational, clinical and research activities take place within the context of the East Carolina University Brody School of Department and the University Health Systems of Eastern North Carolina-Pitt County. The central component of the medical center will be the new East Carolina Heart Institute (ECHI). Designed to be a world-class cardiovascular destination offering state-of-the-art medical technology, education, and research in one location, the East Carolina Heart Institute is composed of three main partners Vidant Medical Center, East Carolina University, and private practice practitioners. The Institute is committed to superior patient care, collaborative research, and continuous training and education. The East Carolina Heart Institute is the umbrella name for the two facilities that make up the Institute

Job tasks The primary focus of this position will be cardiac surgery nurse navigator.

Manages comprehensive nursing care for patients (within specialty area) whose needs range from uncomplicated to complex and rapidly changing. Success Criteria:
located on holistic assessment, identifies significant aspects of the situation and determines the appropriate course of action to move patient/family towards optimal health.
Assesses changes in patient status; anticipates problems before they occur and implements measures to minimize risk.
Organizes and prioritizes and documents nursing care activities considering the needs of the patients and other staff members.
Provides leadership abilities to develop, analyze, integrate complex data, and update individualized care.
Negotiates short/long term goals with the patient to develop and evaluate the individualized care.
Initiates/facilitates/collaborates with all members of the interdisciplinary team to improve care delivered to the patients, ensuring that appropriate referrals (interdisciplinary and community) are made and completed.
Utilizes the nursing process to facilitate the patient's care using time and resources efficiently, and assumes accountcapability for the effectiveness of care. Coordinates care with the interdisciplinary members consistent with functions and responsibilities.
Initiates comprehensive patient and family education.
Uses professional judgement to appropriately delegate
Makes and documents, age-appropriate interventions located on individual patient needs.
Coordinates and manages care by applying analytical reasoning, reflection, rational problem-solving expertise, using evidence-located information and clinical judgment.
Safely performs technical expertise in area of practice. Demonstrates practice located on expertise of all polices, procedures, nursing standards, and legal issues in areas of specialty.
Demonstrates a caring, compassionate approach to patient/family, functioning as a patient/family advocate
Participates in shared decision making and problem solving to promote effective collaboration with interdisciplinary team
Use established outcome measures to evaluate effectiveness of care.
Promotes effective and efficient use of educational resources in achieving desired patient results.
Evaluates and documents patient's response to treatment.
Collaborates with support services and multidisciplinary team in providing care.
Assures quality care through professional growth and development.
Serves in preceptor function for clinical area.
Uses formal and informal methods to teach other staff members..
Independently evaluates own practice and goals; initiates discussion of performance with manager.
Provides written professional practice goals for the upcoming year.
Monitors progress toward, and provides evidence of achieving mutually agreed upon goals within established time frame. Provides written evaluation of previous year's goals.
Attends to own continuing education by providing evidence of a minimum of six (6) contact hours; or two significant academic courses per year; or certification in specialty area with evidence of contact hours required to maintain certification.
Demonstrates effective use of computer-located information for decision support, continuous quality improvement and professional development
Assumes leadership abilities function in clinic area and the larger organization.
Takes action and coaches others in resolving continuing problems and unit issues.
Develops and implements recommendations to improve the unit environment.
Provides effective representation on a committee, task force, or unit council.
Evaluates, and develops recommendations for new and/or revised standards of nursing care and practice in response to patient or unit needs.
Effectively manages conflict by confronting the issue or problem and collaborating with others to explore and implement acceptable solutions.

Demonstrates fiscal accountcapability for one's own practice while providing quality care.

Reviews and analyzes current nursing literature and research in area of specialty as a basis for improving practice.

Minimum Education/practice Graduation from state-accredited school of registered nursing and two years of nursing practice, with at least one year in the assigned specialty area. Must have a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
