Position Summary The College of Engineering is seeking a Head Academic Advisor . This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

This academic advisor will provide leadership abilities for the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering (MIME) with academic advising and support of students, including but not limited to orientation, academic success strategies, career planning, course programming, and retention efforts. The School of MIME strives to emphasize a culture of collegiality and excellence in both research and education.
MIME has about 1700 undergraduate students and about 300 graduate students that work with 60 world-class faculty members.

Reporting to the College of Engineering's adjunct Dean of Academic Programs, this individual advises a diverse population of students in regard to their academic planning and progress by utilizing professional advising and guidance expertise. They interpret and explain university academic policy and procedures to assist students in making decisions concerning personal education goals leading towards graduation. They will develop partnerships with undergraduate advisors and faculty in the MIME community and externally to promote and refine the School of MIME academic advising program, along with coordinating assessment and recommending changes to curriculum that impacts students' capability to persist toward graduation.

The Head Advisor monitors student progress and suggests corrective action when the student encounters academic difficulty. The Head Advisor will work with other university departments regarding undergraduate academic courses that support degree programs. The Head Advisor is a source of information for prospective students through participation in various university and college sponsored orientations and events. The Head Advisor also works with student information systems and various data files and sources to prepare reports using multiple databases and spreadsheets. The Head Advisor keeps abreast of university and college policies, procedures, rules, and regulations to assist students in meeting academic requirements.

Position tasks 50% - Direct advising engineering students (undergraduate):
   » Utilize an knowledge of the various needs and backgrounds of all students to monitor the academic progress of MIME students.
   » Assist students with academic program planning, course selection and registration, resource connections, and exploration of experiential learning opportunities.
   » Provide advising that helps students connect their expertise, abilities, and interests with their academic and career goals.
   » Provide proactive advising for students experiencing academic difficulty.
   » Maintain accurate electronic notes and records of students' progress in MyDegrees system.
30% - Coordination of MIME advising program:
   » Implement, supervise, and assess the development of MIME advising initiatives to expand and improve advising services through a variety of delivery methods.
   » Utilize university and college data sources to inform continuous improvement goals and build/implement best practices for undergraduate student success.
   » Lead staff meetings, and participate in campus-wide committees tied with academic advising or specialty areas.
   » In concert with the other COE School Head Advisors, organize, and delegate tasks related to academic difficulty to create pathways for students to return to good standing.
   » Support the orientation programs for MIME students in the College by designing and updating orientation materials. Present this information during admissions, orientation or other events.
   » Act as liaison for the School of MIME with other COE schools, campus, and external partners or delegate appropriately to other advisors. Influence curricular changes and policy recommendations by providing feedback that will have an impact on the student populations. 10% - Lead Work/managery:
   » Supervise four to five academic advisors to develop and support a diverse, cohesive, mutually accountable, and high performing advising team.
   » Identify and guide the team in accessing professional and personal development resources to support these ends.
   » Recommend hiring, termination, discipline, conduct performance evaluations, develop work schedules and assignments, assign and approve work, review work in progress, and ensure deadlines are met. 10% - Collaboration:
   » Collaborate with School, College, and campus to focus on advising or student service programs and support for all students.
   » Represent CoE on committees and task forces as assigned.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
   » Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
   » Demonstrated practice working with people who have diverse backgrounds, cultures, and languages.
   » Demonstrated capability to effectively communicate in written, verbal, and presentation formats for individuals and small and large groups.
   » Strong interpersonal expertise, including a demonstrated capability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty and administrators.
   » One year (1) of professional practice in academic advising, admissions counseling, academic support programs or a combination of those areas with another student contact area.
   » Demonstrated computer expertise including proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, email, databases, and presentation software.
   » Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing inclusiveness, collaboration and diversity.
   » This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must prosperously complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
   » Master's Degree in Engineering, STEM discipline, Education, College/Higher Education Administration or closely related field from an accredited institution.
   » Employment as a professional academic advisor in a college or university setting for more than three (3) years.
   » Direct practice working with college students in academic advising, teaching, or student development position.
   » Professional practice assisting international students.
   » Knowledge of student development theory and proactive advising strategies.
   » Lead or managery practice.

   » As this position supports the primary mission of the university, the College of Engineering (COE), and academic services, Information technology may require some evening and weekend work.
