ESSENTIAL tasks AND Job responsibilities:
The Community Development Department (CDD) is the planning agency for the City of Cambridge. Encompassing the Housing, Economic Development, Community Planning, Zoning and Development, and Environmental and Transportation Planning divisions, CDD's mission is to foster a livable, sustainable, just, and equitable community. CDD engages and collaborates with community partners, other government agencies, businesses, and residents to make Cambridge a desirable place to live, work, learn, play, and innovate.
Under the direction of the adjunct City Manager for Community Development, the Director of Economic Development is responsible for managing a 5-person team, creating, and managing the city's economic development programs, initiatives, and services, and cultivating a supportive environment for Cambridge's small, women and minority-owned businesses. Specific tasks include but are not limited to the following:
   » Actively supervise and manage staff in the Economic Development division to advance a wide variety of activities designed to meet the City's need for a diversified and thriving economic base. Lead and manage projects, set targets with timelines, manage budget, and ensure that all participants are aware of expectations.
   » supervise promotion of a healthy sustainable business climate through outreach to and support of the business community ranging from entrepreneurial, small businesses to large high technology and life science communities in Cambridge.
   » Promote small and emerging technology business assistance, cultivating a supportive environment for a range of local businesses including start-up companies and the innovation economy.
   » Research and analyze market conditions and emerging labor markets to best position Cambridge to benefit from current trends and to identify opportunities for economic growth.
   » Design and implement strategies to maintain the unique character and vitality in neighborhood-serving commercial districts, to attract and retain businesses and to increase business investment.
   » Work with other city departments, CDD staff, business and community organizations, and education and research institutions to expand employment and training opportunities for Cambridge residents.
   » Develop leadership abilities capabilities in staff including skill development and strong team orientation; supervise organizational operation of the Economic Development division.
   » Lead and participate in community meetings with business associations, neighborhood organizations, developers, and public officials; engage the community and other constituencies to solicit input and feedback.
   » As needed, represent the department on committees and at public meetings of various elected and appointed bodies such as the City Council, Planning Board, City committees and other public forums.
   » Perform related tasks as required.

MINIMUM Requirements:
   » The City of Cambridge's workforce, like the community Information technology serves, is diverse. candidates must have the capability to work and interact effectively with individuals and groups with a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.
   » Bachelor's degree in economic development, urban planning, business administration or related field and a minimum of 9-12 years of professional work practice in economic development, including at least 3 years in a managery capacity. A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for 2 years of practice.
   » capability to provide effective supervision and staff management. Demonstrated capability to lead and develop leadership abilities in others.
   » practice managing multiple demands and capability to prioritize workloads, multitask and meet deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment.
   » Good judgement and excellent interpersonal expertise in dealing with a diverse range of City employees, board/committee members, elected and appointed officials, business owners, and members of the public.
   » Excellent written and oral communication and presentation expertise.
   » Overall computer proficiency including general office applications (Microsoft Office suite) and other applications (e.g., Adobe Acrobat, Salesforce).
PREFERRED Requirements:
   » expertise of business development finance, marketing, real estate, and labor market dynamics.
   » expertise of the Cambridge community and business climate

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: capability to read and analyze large quantities of information. Must have sufficient mobility to get back and forth from office to offsite meetings. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to execute essential functions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT : Work is conducted primarily in an office environment with fluorescent lighting, air conditioning, computers, and other standard office equipment, but also involves meetings in other offices or facilities.

RATE: $101,861- $121,315 + excellent benefits
