Small Press Distribution, better known as SPD, has for five decades connected readers with writers by providing dynamic access to independently published literature - getting small press books out into the world so that essential but underrepresented literary communities can fully participate in the marketplace. For numerous small presses, SPD has long provided the only reliable and available access to the U.S. book market.
Position
The staff and Board of Directors of SPD are seeking an Executive Director who possesses leadership abilities capcapability combined with strong business acumen and is motivated to serve the small press literary community. The position reports to the Board of Directors with frequent interaction with the Board President. The Executive Director will need to have proximity to SPD's Berkeley, CA headquarters. Relocation assistance is available to the winning candidate.
The ideal candidate for this position will be someone who can effectively partner with staff, board, and publishers in shaping the direction of the organization, and then guide the changes required to improve and modernize the services we provide to publishers, develop relationships with new publishers, expand our fundraising capcapability, and foster an empowered, high- performing, inclusive, diverse and equitable workplace.
SPD's Executive Director is responsible for four key areas: Organizational leadership abilities and Strategy, Operational and Financial leadership abilities, Fundraising/Development, and Publisher Relations.
Organizational leadership abilities and Strategy
Facilitate a collaborative process to define SPD's future direction Translate long-term direction into annual business plan Align staff's functions and goals in support of achieving the annual plan Foster a diverse organization, empower staff, promote teamwork, and develop staff capabilities in alignment with future direction of the organization supervise the development and implementation of progressive HR policies and program Lead a team of nine which includes three direct reports
Operational and Financial leadership abilities
supervise SPD's financial health with accountcapability for an operating budget of approximately $1.3M; effectively lead annual planning and goal setting in partnership with staff and board Develop and utilize financial reporting tools that help guide staff and board in making sound business decisions Guide implementation of changes to business processes required to modernize and improve support and services provided to publishers Collaborate with staff to develop updated operational policies and practices to empower decision making and execution at staff level Provide oversight of Operations to ensure staff is effectively managed, and has the training, tools, data and processes required to execute book distribution activities on behalf of publishers
Fundraising/Development
supervise national level outreach, advocacy and cultivation particularly among the general community of literary organizations, arts leaders, government funders, private foundations, individual donors, and SPD board Evaluate current fundraising capcapability and implement changes required first to maintain and eventually expand fundraising
Publisher Relations
Build strong relationships with publishers, foster staff/publisher collaboration to ensure the organization is attuned to publisher challenges and priorities and that SPD's services are evolving with publisher needs
Priorities for the first year of the new Executive Director:
Become a visible and credible champion of SPD's broader vision of inclusion and access to small press publishing, inclusion and equity for SPD community internally and externally Lead a strategic planning process in partnership with staff, board, and publishers In partnership with staff and board, orchestrate a retooling of our workplace practices and working environment Provide management oversight of facilities and operations, ensuring staff has the tools and processes needed to carry out their responsibilities Foster a diverse, empowered, and inclusive work environment in which innovative recruiting, selection, onboarding, and coaching and development practices are implemented which are reflective of the societal values and priorities of SPD's publishing and readership constituencies.
Candidate Qualifications / practice
suitable education Bachelor's degree or equivalent work practice is desired. Higher education in the arts is preferred. practice: Minimum 7 years of non-profit or significant leadership abilities in functions of increasing responsibility Arts or literary related practice and/or operational practice in a distribution environment a plus Management of a budget of $750,000 or greater Track record of effectively guiding organizational change resulting in positive impact for staff and stakeholders Demonstrated practice developing diverse, empowered, and inclusive teams; an practiced leader with a high degree of self-consciousness Interest in and aptitude for fundraising capability to manage a travel schedule of up to 10%
