The Opportunity
WBEZ 91.5 FM Chicago is seeking a versatile candidate for weekday substitute anchoring and weekend reporter.
This hybrid position will spotlight your talents as both a reporter and on-air anchor.
As our reporter/anchor substitute, you will have an authentic on-air presence as you write and deliver newscasts and provide the continuity that knits the programming together. During active news cycles, you may conduct live or pre-recorded interviews. You will be eventually expected to fill-in on all weekday anchor shifts, as needed.
You will be a vital part of our connection to our listening audience and act as the final gatekeeper for our on-air product. Therefore, the ideal candidate must have excellent news judgement, an engaging and natural on-air style, a thirst for accurate, timely news coverage, strong technical expertise, meticulous attention to detail and accuracy, and the capability to write quickly and compellingly for audio.
This position works closely with editors and producers to ensure that our content is fair, objective, and accurate. The substitute anchor must integrate network and WBEZ content seamlessly.
You should also be comfortable adapting to various shifts, schedules, and technology.
In addition to substitute anchoring, you will also be WBEZ's weekend reporter.
As part of this hybrid position this candidate will be a versatile reporter who can provide weekend news reporting. We're looking for a curious, aggressive, and skillful writer who is equally adept at both quick-turn breaking news and the capability to find off-beat and human-interest weekend stories and features. Your work may also be featured on Monday's newscasts.
On weekdays when no substitute anchoring is needed, this candidate will be assigned to the news desk for reporting or news producing.
To be considered for this function, in your cover letter, you MUST include links (Soundcloud, YouTube, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) to anchoring air checks, reporting and/or other on-air work.
Essential tasks and Responsibilities
Substitute Anchoring
   » Presenting on-air content including news, weather, continuity, and funding credits
   » Writing, preparing, and anchoring regular newscasts
   » Trained on all weekday and weekend anchoring shifts
   » Run own board
   » Participate in on-air fundraising and represent WBEZ to the community
   » Other tasks, as assigned
Weekend Reporting
   » capability to write and produce stories at on a wide variety of topics with skill, accuracy, and insight
   » capability to handle deadline pressure
   » Demonstrated capability to work collaboratively with editors, producers, and reporters across the newsroom in service of shared excellence
   » Excellent written and verbal communication expertise, and the capability to cultivate strong relationships with colleagues and sources
   » Strong audio expertise
Required expertise and practice
   » Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent training and professional practice
   » 3+ years of practice in a broadcast environment, practice at a public radio station and familiarity with NPR programs is desirable
   » Prefer practice hosting NPR News Magazines at a public radio station
   » capability to reliably work all anchor shifts
   » The capability to work a flexible schedule in order to fill-in during various weekday anchor shifts
   » Demonstrated mastery of on-air presentation expertise and talent at live anchoring. At least 2+ years anchor practice
   » practice preparing and delivering newscasts, including writing & editing for precision and accuracy
   » Must be proficient in live board operation and digital audio editing
   » Strong organizational and time management expertise with the capability to track developing stories
   » capability to work well with colleagues and thrive in a collaborative environment
   » Thoughtful, creative, energetic, collegial, calm under pressure and flexible
   » expertise of Chicago is a plus - Anchors are expected to be informed on a wide variety of topics beyond current events

This position is a member of SAG-AFTRA
Due to current COVID restrictions, you must be able to work remotely at your own designated location with Internet access and you must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier offices, if needed. Right now, most of our staff is working remotely.
