Organizational Unit Overview The East Carolina University, School of Medicine, Pediatric Outpatient Clinic provides outpatient medical care for children from birth to age 21. The clinic staff assists clients in obtaining diagnosis and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses as well as provides nursing care. Staff provides health education and access to information to enhance client health and to prevent illness. Staff provides for client comfort and safety while endeavoring to be as cost effective to keep medical costs down. The Pediatric Clinics are a service component of the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine. These clinics are involved in the treatment of patients as a function of the training and education of medical students, physicians and allied health personnel in primary medical care on a regional consultative basis for eastern North Carolina.

Job tasks The Department of Pediatrics seeks a Nurse Specialist to provide direct patient care and case management for the Pediatric Adolescent clinics and assist in the outpatient management of general pediatric and adult patients. This position will serve as an extension of the physicians, but report to the Nurse Administrator of Clinical Operations. The selected candidate will prioritize clinical situations, ensure orders are written and carried out in an expeditious manner, and facilitate communication between the specialty and ancillary departments and staff. In addition, the selected candidate will make appropriate referrals as needed, maintain accurate patient records and follow agency research guidelines for documentation of patients on studies and protocols. Independent nursing care will be expected, including administering immunizations, IV therapy, nursing support, technical assistance, assisting physicians with clinic procedures, and the activities of maintaining a safe environment, care standards, and inventory control. The selected candidate will interact with residents, medical students, nursing students, and other learners on a everyday basis to teach procedures and concepts that relate to nursing practice. In addition, the selected candidate will serve as an educator for the patient population and other family members regarding preventative health measures, disease, and disease management. The selected candidate will also help cover the Adult and Pediatric Healthcare Clinic as needed.

Currently, hours of clinic operation are from 8:00am to 5:00pm, with a flexible scheduled late day to accommodate patient care, Monday through Friday.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Minimum Education/practice Graduation from state-accredited school of registered nursing and two years of nursing practice, with at least one year in the assigned specialty area. Must have a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation N/A

Preferred practice, expertise, Training/Education Prefer two years of pediatric and/or adult nursing practice.
Possess the capability to work with a positive approach in a team environment. The ideal candidate should also possess and demonstrate leadership abilities qualities and be self-directed with the capability to utilize critical thinking expertise, communicate effectively, and perform many tasks simultaneously. The selected candidate will possess a high degree of sensitivity to the special needs of pediatric adolescent patient population.
