Organizational Unit Overview The Office of Student Development and Academic Counseling (OSDAC) function is to provide academic counseling, career guidance, student development and related support services to our learners with emphasis on maximizing the overall educational practice and the achievement of expected learning results. This position will join a team of Learning expertise Specialists to promote the academic success, wellness and development of learners through a full range of services. This position will work collaboratively with offices across the Academic Affairs units to develop strategies to enhance students' learning, development and wellbeing.

Job tasks • Identifying and responding to students with academic difficulties to develop academic interventions designed to improve performance.

• Providing academic counseling related to the development of effective learning expertise, study strategies, creation of personal study materials, note-taking instruction, and assessment of learning styles, time management, and test preparation, and plan and lead group sessions on the above expertise.

• Monitoring changes in students' academic performance to: identify students at risk for underperforming, determining student's need for support and identifying appropriate resources as needed

• Counseling students needing remediation on an Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE), or needing remediation plans for USMLE Step 1, Step 2CK, Step 2CS or NBME Clerkship Subject Exams or other exams as needed.

• Evaluating program effectiveness

• Conducting individual diagnostic interviews and consultative activities for medical students to identify strategies for academic success.

• Meeting individually with students who fail an exam or course to assess the student's current learning strategies and level of academic functioning and provide services/interventions as appropriate.

• Assisting students to identify and develop learning strategies for potential learning disabilities or differences and making referrals to discapability services when appropriate

• Maintaining files for each student who receives services or participates in programs from OSDAC.

• Serving as a resource to Curriculum and Promotion/Review Committees, working closely with the Office of Medical Education to report on issues that impede student progress.

• Assisting with the formation of Academic Support Teams for learner remediation, forming Individualized Learning Plans and other academic needs

• Working closely with the Office of Admissions to determine learning styles and needs of learners as they matriculate into the medical program

• Working with pipeline and outreach programs around evaluation and academic development of pre-college and undergraduate learners around health professions program preparedness

• Working with the Office of Faculty Development to co-sponsor workshops and offerings to help faculty lgain how learners learn

Minimum Education/practice Master's or other advanced degree in Academic Counseling, education, higher education, Educational Psychology, Special Education, or a related field and has specialization in the process of learning and remediation.

practice in conducting educational workshops, seminars, and small group sessions.

knowledge of cognitive development and emotional intelligence

Demonstrated strong self-initiative

Exceptional computer, organizational, data entry and project management expertise, including demonstrated expertise in Microsoft software: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Knowledge of Access is a plus.

practice in working with tutoring and/or peer assisted learning program, research, educational assessment, learning expertise development and career development practice

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation none

Preferred practice, expertise, Training/Education Be team oriented and user friendly to students, faculty and staff.

Be prepared to handle a busy caseload and spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advanced planning and the capability to work at a fast pace.

Be culturally competent, possess a strong work ethic and a availability to collaborate.

Have proficiency in oral and written communication expertise, public speaking and leading group discussions.

Evidence of consciousness of educational demands at the professional level and/or practice providing academic counseling support to professional students.

Knowledge and practice with factors interfering with standard academic performance, e.g. social, emotional, cultural, cognitive deficiencies, allowing for differential diagnosis of various learning difficulties.

capability to identify students who need referral to a counselor, psychiatrist, or other health care professional.

Knowledge and capability to recognize students with learning differences and/or possible learning difficulties, to be able to make appropriate referrals for evaluations when necessary.

Knowledge and capability to provide academic counseling regarding learning and study strategies, time management, test taking strategies and compensatory strategies for at-risk students and students with learning differences, and consciousness that learning strategies may have to change with different courses and curriculum responsibilities.

Knowledge and sensitivity to critical and subtle issues which can potentially impact academic performance by students from diverse backgrounds.

capability to recognize and respond to student needs with appropriate individualized learning strategies for academic success.

capability to organize and teach study groups and workshops to help students understand differing learning styles and strategies to help them become more effective learners and test takers.

Evidence of capability to establish, meet, and track short-term, mid-range, and long range goals and objectives with minimal direction

availability to attend meetings and workshops to insure consciousness of current trends in support of educational excellence and report information to the office to insure their consciousness of these trends.
