Position Summary: The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis seeks an practiced and innovative music leader with a national record of achievement for a tenure-track faculty appointment as Director of Choral Activities, to begin August 2022. The School of Music's Conducting Area is a highly collaborative, multidimensional area of the Performance Studies Division offering the M.M., A.D. and DMA degree programs. The accomplishments of candidates for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population, and their capability to contribute in significant ways to the diversity and intercultural academic goals of the university.

Job responsibilities:
   » Responsible for the artistic, administrative, and visionary leadership abilities of the School of Music choral program
   » Conduct the School of Music's University Singers and/or other choral ensembles.
   » Teach undergraduate and graduate conducting courses, choral literature, or other courses as assigned.
   » Assume leadership abilities function in the individual and collaborative recruitment of vocal students through building and maintaining productive relationships with public school choral programs, recruitment trips, ensemble tours, conference attendance/performance, and School of Music events.
   » Interacting with the arts community and supporting music educators in the region.
   » The prosperous candidate will be expected to contribute to the discipline through engagement in significant professional research/creative activities including maintaining regional, national and international visibility in performance, external masterclasses, conference presentations, services to the school/college/university/community, and mentoring students.

The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music enjoys a proud 75-year history of producing prosperous and accomplished music professionals. Anchored in the culturally diverse and musically rich, cosmopolitan city of Memphis, the School's inclusive program is purposely designed to inspire, train, and launch sustainable careers for musicians, scholars, and industry professionals of tomorrow. The Choral area directs five ensembles: University Singers, Chamber Choir, Soprano/Alto Choir, Tenor/ Bass Choir, and the Voices of Inspiration Choir. Ensembles enjoy multiple performance opportunities that range from local to international opportunities. Faculty are actively involved in local, national, and international performance careers, providing students real-time, real-world perspective as they begin to navigate their own professional music careers. The School's immersive and forward-thinking curriculum along with broad community partnerships create unrivaled local and global opportunities for students and faculty. With the opening of the new Scheidt Family Music Center in 2022, the School will solidify its place as the most comprehensive school of music in the region. The 82,000 square foot Music Center boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a 900+ seat concert hall and a dedicated choral rehearsal room. The Rudi E. Minimum Position Appropriate qualifications:
   » Master's degree with significant professional practice required. ABD or doctorate preferred.
   » Demonstrate, through performance and/or publications, the capability to prepare students for 21st century careers via high professional standards, superb pedagogical expertise, and diverse/innovative programming.
   » Demonstrated success in leading a university choral program. 3 years college teaching practice, graduate level and/or professional level practice, and a proven record of student successes preferred.
   » prosperous candidates must provide evidence of effective and measurable recruitment efforts as they relate to choral programs and graduate conducting students, e.g. professional relationships with music educators, multiple invitations to serve as clinician/guest conductor of honor choir festivals, hosting high school festivals and workshops, and invitations to serve as an adjudicator of high school performances.
   » Scholarly and practical facility with conducting pedagogy and effective rehearsal technique preferred.
   » Evidence of an established national and international trajectory for significant creative activity and leadership abilities functions in the field of choral conducting, preferred.
   » A strong interest in and practice with community engagement, music entrepreneurship, music leadership abilities, and/or other nontraditional career models preferred.
   » The accomplishments of candidates for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population, and their capability to contribute in significant ways to the diversity and collective mission, vision and operating standards of the School of Music.
