Position Summary This position is a Seed Certification Aide 1, intermittent .95 FTE (approximately 38 hours per week) for the OSU Extension Service Linn County. This position will be located in Tangent, Oregon. Hours vary depending on the season and workload. During the busy season (approx. July-October), there will be 40-hour work weeks. During the slow season (approx. November-June), the hours will vary considerably.

This position will perform intermittent work in Linn and adjacent counties primarily to visit seed warehouses in a university vehicle to take samples of crop seed for testing and to deliver or attach certification tags to seed lots that meet the minimum quality standards.

The Oregon Seed Certification Service (OSCS) program is under the Extension Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. The purpose of seed certification is to ensure quality seeds through programs such as field inspections, seed sampling, and seed testing. The OSU Extension Service Engages the people of Oregon with research-located expertise and education that strengthen communities and economies, sustain natural resources, and promote healthy families and individuals. The Extension Service has a presence in each of Oregon's 36 counties.

Position tasks 70% Seed Certification Field Work (time spent on each will vary depending on the time of year):
Schedule and travel to seed warehouses to take samples of crop seed for testing. Inspect the seed lot to make sure Information technology is labeled properly with a lot number that matches all accompanying requests and paperwork. Verify the lot size is as stated on the paperwork, and that Information technology does not exceed the maximum allowed lot size. Use the proper probe to take seed from various bags to make one representative composite sample for each seed lot. Sign and seal the sample bag, and maintain chain of custody. Use proper packaging to prevent contamination of the sample. Deliver to the OSU Seed Laboratory in a timely manner. Use iPad application to track sampling requests and samples.

Tag seed: attach or supervise the attachment of Oregon and OECD certification tags onto each container in the lot using the appropriate method for the container type (e.g. staple, adhesive, etc.). Complete and forward any required records to the OSCS office in the required manner (e.g. using iPad application, email, etc.).

Inspect seed coating lines using an OSCS checklist.

15% Seed Certification Computerized Tag Printing Program:
Receive, verify, and print tag orders, including special orders from OSCS, using OSCS Online Services. Accurate data entry and recordkeeping are essential.

Answer questions from growers, seed company representatives, OSCS office personnel, and warehouse personnel regarding specific lots of seed and information on certification requirements and standards.

Distribute/deliver tags to the appropriate seed warehouses upon request. This may include attaching tags to the applicable lot or superviseing the attachment of tags to the pertinent containers of each seed lot.

15% Seed Certification Other tasks:
Following the lead of the Seed Certification Aide 2 or OSCS office personnel, organize and schedule daily/weekly schedule. Ensure work schedule meets needs for timely sampling/tagging. Plan the geographical routes to fulfill requests. Coordinate sampling schedule with other counties and samplers as needed.

Communicate with warehouse personnel regarding certification requirements, sampling, and tagging services.

Maintain and update logbook and other records. Deliver records to main OSCS office in a timely manner.

Ensure that supplies are adequate, maintain inventory, and order supplies from OSCS as needed.

Attend in-house certification trainings and meetings when needed.

Other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Additional Required Qualifications Must possess the capability to lgain policies, procedures, standards and requirements; apply them to procedures carried out on a everyday basis.

Basic computer expertise which must include the capability to use a computer and tablet, availability to lgain a Macintosh operating system, accurate data entry, and use of web programs.

Must have good oral and written communication expertise, and the capability to interact with the public in a professional, positive, and friendly manner.

Detail-oriented with the capability to multi-task while completing other assignments on time.

capability to work flexible days and hours for varied work schedule according to the needs of the Certification program.

capability to meet the physical requirement for this position, which includes inspecting facilities (for example climbing stairs in warehouses). Must be able to execute seed sampling which requires visually inspecting and reaching all parts of the seed lot.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule Physically active work done in warehouse and field conditions which are sometimes on uneven/rugged terrain in hot, cold, or humid conditions. Chaff, dust, and pollen are present. Must be able to lift, carry, push/pull objects weighing up to 30lbs. Following safety protocols, must be able to reach all parts of a seed lot required for sampling. Must be available for on-call tasks. To meet shipping date and other workload factors, employee may be required to begin work before 8:00 am or end after 5:00 pm. Employee is on the road and working in open warehouses during variable summer and winter weather conditions.
