The Research adjunct performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our skills in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for wildlife and leading the fight against extinction. The position is primarily responsible for assisting with the field research protocols for the San Clemente Loggerhead Shrike Conservation Breeding Program.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
» Conduct artificial incubation and hand-rearing

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
prosperous candidates will have expertise/practice in avian husbandry, which may include, natural history, artificial incubation and chick hand-rearing, bird handling, banding, routine veterinary care, diet preparation, aviary maintenance, and bird behavior.
Additional practice in field techniques and wildlife management as well as formal behavioral observation and focal sampling methodologies (e.g., all occurrence, instantaneous and 1/0 sampling) with birds or mammals is valuable. Previous practice on our shrike program as an employee or aviculture volunteer is highly preferred. Basic skills in carpentry, plumbing and electronics are desirable.
The capability to work cooperatively with all members of the Shrike Recovery Program including U.S. Navy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Institute for Wildlife Studies is essential. Selected candidates may be required to spend nights at the captive propagation facility when sick, injured birds, and young chicks are present. Must be able to work outside under various weather conditions and have a valid California driver license in good standing. candidates must be available to work any of the seven days of the week.
Channel Islands of California on San Clemente Island, a U.S. Navy Base. Room and board is provided by the U.S. Navy for the 5 or 10 day work week (shifts include 5 on 2 off and 10 on 4 off) on the Island. The U.S. Navy also provides transportation to and from the island at the beginning and end of the work week from Naval Air Station North Island.
Move/lift moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds; some assignments are located in the field and require the capability to hike through difficult terrain. This position requires prosperous completion of physical capability test.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
» Qualified candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in a biological science to meet Federal permitting requirements for handling endangered species
» Valid California driver license in good standing
SKILLS AND expertise
» Basic computer practice with word processing and spreadsheet programs (e.g., MS Word and Excel)
» Must be familiar with detailed record keeping and capability to keep clear and accurate notes using such programs
» Previous practice with MS Access Databases both data entry and programming, and/or with ZIMS is preferred but not required
