Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH TENCHICIAN 2 limited duration position (expected to last until December 31, 2023) for the Columbia Basin Experiment Station at Oregon State University (OSU) located in Adams, Oregon.

The BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH TENCHICIAN 2 provides technical support in the management and coordination of experiments for units involved in agriculture, forestry, and food science research. Work performed may include technical research management relating to plants and the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment.

Position tasks 30% - Sample collection:
   » Performs soil and plant sampling from agricultural field experiments.
   » Organizes soil and plant samples ensuring an effective transfer of samples from the field to the laboratory.
   » Keeps a sample inventory of field collected material, analyzed material, and stored material.
30% - Sample Preparation:
   » Performs soil and plant sample preparation for laboratory analyses including air drying, grinding, sieving, and oven drying.
   » Loads samples into sampling cups for spectroscopic analysis. 30% - Data Collection:
   » Records and summarizes observations, measurements, and processes performed during research as required by research project leader ensures all data is collected as prescribed and may input data into a computer.
   » Records and summarizes observations, measurements, and processes performed during research as required by research project leader ensures all data is collected as prescribed.
   » Keeps records of the soils and plant materials that are being prepared for laboratory assays and as well as results of laboratory analyses.
   » Performs physico-chemical analyses of soil samples in the laboratory.
   » Performs data collection in the field with on-the-go and field ready instruments. 10% - Unit Operation:
   » Typical tasks: performs technical and manual functions, observes and makes suggestions for improvement and overall effectiveness of facilities, equipment, or technical procedures in support of the unit.
   » Participates in meetings and trainings to ensure teamwork, safety, and effective communication with the project leader and teammates.
   » Helps the project leader in the preparation of laboratory standard operating procedures and laboratory guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications
Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of practice related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and practice.

   » Two years of college-level courses in plant and/or soil science and one year of practice related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR
   » An equivalent combination of training and practice.

   » Training or practice indicating the a) practice with laboratory analyses; b) expertise of basic math and spreadsheet work; c) practice with soil or plant field sampling; d) capability to handle, organize, and store soil and plant materials; e) capability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment; f) capability to lgain laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques; g) capability to keep accurate records; and h) capability to follow written and verbal instructions.
   » Bachelors degree with coursework in plant or soil science.
   » practice working in soil sampling and analysis. practice with Microsoft Office suite or other equivalent software.
   » Excellent customer service, communication, and teamwork expertise.

   » This is the second level of a three-level series. Employees in this class are distinguished from the lower-level by the requirement to apply more broad expertise of the research project goals and objectives; by more involvement with establishing research projects procedures; by the coordination of the activities of a small research facility; and by more broad technical management expertise, such as propagating plants, treating, storing and labeling seed and market products and performing broad equipment repairs.
