Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is dedicated to the discovery, development, and promotion of biomedical expertise involving cell biology and the anatomical sciences of Gross Anatomy, Developmental Anatomy, Histology, and Neuroanatomy. Through this mission, we aim to improve human health through innovative educational programs and excellence in research and scholarly activities in a dynamic and diverse learning community.

The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is located in the Brody Medical Sciences Building on the west campus of East Carolina University and has fifteen faculty, eight staff, two research fellows, two office support staff, and six to ten doctoral students. Our faculty are actively involved with research areas that include signal transduction; stem cells; educational models and distance learning; cellular senescence and determinants of radiosensitivity in cancer; rearrangements of the cytoskeleton that occur during spermatogenesis; function of delta-catenin, presenilin and cadherins in synaptic remodeling and in cancer; function of tight junctions and claudins in ionic and tissue homeostasis; hyaluronan-CD44 interactions and their influence on BMP-initiated Smad signaling and other signaling pathways; and CD44-initiated signaling pathways that result in enhanced MMP production and extracellular degradation.

all over the brief history of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology has had an active function in training graduate students. Our former students now hold prestigious postdoctoral, faculty, and professional positions all over the United States. In addition to our graduate program, we provide instruction to medical, nursing, physical therapy, and physician adjunct students.

Job tasks A position for a postdoctoral fellow is available in the laboratories of Drs. Maranke Koster and Peter Koch at Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. The overall goal of the research program is to investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie tissue fragility in patients affected by genetic skin disorders known as ectodermal dysplasias. To investigate these mechanisms, the postdoctoral fellow will use and further develop human stem cell-located models that have been established in our laboratory [patient derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models; iPSC]. Specifically, the prosperous candidate will use our established methods to generate keratinocytes from our patient-derived iPSC. These keratinocytes will be used to analyze disease mechanisms using various OMICS and cell biological approaches. In addition, the prosperous candidate will be involved in the analysis of genetically engineered mouse models that replicate ectodermal dysplasia phenotypes.

The prosperous candidate should have practice in cell culture as well as standard techniques in molecular and cellular biology. Candidates with practice in pluripotent stem cell culture and differentiation are preferred. Further, candidates with practice analyzing mouse model phenotypes are highly encouraged to apply.

The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discipline of Cell Biology. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of the project described above. tasks include: hypothesis development, literature review, collection of pilot data, report writing, and supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, superviseing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and multivariate statistics, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Approximately 85% of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to executeing research, preparing grants/manuscripts, and data reporting. Approximately 15% of the postdoctoral scholar's time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the laboratory.

Minimum of 3 years research practice Prior prosperous working practice using a wide variety of cell and molecular biology techniques
Excellent communication expertise using the English language
The capability to work independently within the research laboratory
