The Artistic Director is charged with maintaining the standard of excellence among the artistic staff through interaction, evaluation, example, curricula and artistic leadership abilities. The Artistic Director is an ambassador to the greater community of professional musicians, public and private school music teachers, studio teachers and potential students.The Artistic Director will work with the administrative staff to engage qualified artistic staff to serve as conductors, coaches, sectional leaders and instructors. The Artistic Director is responsible for developing and executing a recruitment program, maintaining close liaison with school and private artistic instructors, and carrying out public relations activities on behalf of the Minnesota Youth Symphonies. The Artistic Director reports to the president of the board of directors and works closely with the Executive Director and is an artistic advisor to the board and its committees. The Artistic Director attends the regularly scheduled board meetings as an ex-officio (non-voting) member and attends committee meetings to provide needed input and skills. The Artistic Director carries out all required tasks in a manner consistent with the policies, procedures, goals and objectives established by the board of directors. As a conductor, this person is responsible for the conducting, education and overall artistic development of the SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, the most advanced orchestra of the Minnesota Youth Symphonies. Symphony Orchestra meets Saturday mornings from 8:45 am- 11:45 am at Highland Park Middle School in Saint Paul from September 2022 to April 2023. This is a part-time position with conducting responsibilities on Saturday mornings and other hours all over the week as needed. Estimated total hours per week between 5-10. Job responsibilities: Program Management and Artistic leadership abilities Organize and facilitate artistic team through collaborative decision-making Communicate a dynamic long-term artistic vision for MYS Manage artistic team alongside Executive Director Collaborate with artistic and administrative staff on program activities and issues; serve as a resource for artistic staff Serve as artistic advisor to the board and its committees. Communicate the artistic vision of MYS to the board and provide regular reports on progress. Attend the regularly scheduled board meetings as an ex-officio (non-voting) member and attend other meetings as necessary. Collaborate with conductors to select repertoire for orchestras Serve as coach for sectionals located upon instrument skills Community Relations and Program Development Participate in auditions, evaluating the skills and techniques of students in area of skills Assist with recruitment of students by direct solicitation, developing recruitment materials, workshops, or by helping develop relationships with private lesson teachers, school orchestra and band teachers, or individuals with connections to young musicians Serve as the public face of MYS in the broader community, communicating the mission and accomplishments of the organization Conducting Conduct Symphony Orchestra during Saturday rehearsals and performances Recruit students for Symphony from surrounding school districts Select literature for the ensemble Plan rehearsals, including selecting literature for sight-reading, sectionals and special events such as side-by-side rehearsals Prepare students for performance opportunities all over the year Qualifications or requirementsEDUCATIONRequired BA or BS in Music Performance or Music Education(or equivalent practice) Preferred Advanced degree or equivalent practice practice AND QUALIFICATIONS Required Able to pass a criminal background check Able to work in a professional, respectful and appropriate manner as outlined in MYS Administrative Guidelines and Policies manual, including the MYS policies regarding harassment, sexual harassment and anti-discrimination Able to adhere to venue COVID-19 guidelines for performances which include either proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative COVID-19 test result Substantial conducting/teaching practice with students at the advanced high school, college or professional levels (All-State level or beyond.) Substantial practice with professional level orchestral repertoire. Recent repertoire has included Mahler: Symphony 2, Rachmaninoff: Symphony 2; Prokofiev: Lt. Kije Substantial performing or teaching practice on an orchestral instrument at the college, advanced community or professional level Demonstrated capability to engage with and inspire advanced high school level student musicians in an empathetic and positive way Lesson and rehearsal planning skills Strong interpersonal communication skills including the capability to engage with parents, school directors and studio teachers Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office or similar applications Preferred Demonstrated practice leading a small, highly engaged, artistic team Prior practice in non-profit music or higher education environment preferred How to submit the application:To apply, please forward your resume, a cover letter, and a recording of a recent performance (or an opportunity to view an upcoming rehearsal or performance) to Amelia Hemmingsen, Executive Director, at mys@mnyouthsymphonies.org.SEARCH PROCESS: Applications will be accepted through January 21st, 2022.
