The Associate Director for Donor Communications will play a key function in supporting various stewardship communications needs within UVA Health Development. The prosperous candidate will be a skilled written communicator who can adapt their writing style to different authors and audiences and quickly draft well-written and brief executive-level correspondence from UVA Health leadership abilities. The Associate Director will be responsible for preparing custom stewardship reports highlighting the impact of private support for delivery to UVA Health's largest benefactors. They will also work collaboratively and creatively with colleagues on other donor-facing stewardship communications projects designed to enhance UVA Health's relationship with its donors. The incumbent will report to the Director of Donor Relations & Strategic Stewardship. Responsibilities: Stewardship Communications - 40% » Develop customized stewardship reports and materials to showcase and communicate philanthropic impact to high-level individual donors. Collaborate with development agents, other colleagues to gather content from principal investigators, other faculty; perform additional research as needed to supplement content provided by investigators. Make scientific content understandable for a lay audience and demonstrate the impact of private support on UVA Health's four mission areas of community and health equity, education, patient care and research. Employ various mediums, including print and digital, for delivery of engaging and impactful reporting. » Partner with the team to design and edit annual endowment reports, including narrative content and financial reporting. Collaborate with Donor Relations colleagues to maximize the potential of the new Ovrture digital reporting platform to deliver engaging reporting with multimedia content. Periodically evaluate annual reporting process in partnership with DR team and recommend improvements. » Collaborate with colleagues across Grounds on pan-University stewardship reports involving key UVA Health donors. » Partner with HSD communications team to produce content/stories with donor stewardship focus that foster campaign priorities and messaging; conduct interviews with donors, faculty, staff, and community members to enhance content. » Collaborate with University partners on compelling stories featuring UVA Health donors in University publications (i.e. Envision, Illimitable, UVA Today, Virginia Magazine and others) across all platforms (print, web, video). » Serve as HSD administrator and point for the ThankView video platform; collaborate with DR and Communications colleagues on creative uses for stewardship. Gift Acexpertisements - 35% » Research and prepare customized acknowledgment letters for major gifts to UVA Health on behalf of the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Medical Center CEO, Cancer Center and UVA Children's leadership abilities, and the Senior Associate Vice President for Development. » Provide background on select major gifts/donors to UVA Health Campaign leadership abilities for personal acknowledgment. » Supervise and manage the workflow of part-time Development Associate with responsibilities for processing lower-level acknowledgments. Prepare and refresh acknowledgment letter templates for DA use and edit correspondence as needed. » Serve as the primary reviewer/editor of all draft acknowledgments from University President to UVA Health donors in partnership with HSD development staff. » Coordinate with Donor Relations Coordinator and individual teams to ensure timely delivery and recording of acknowledgments. » Serve as the primary point for documenting and refining UVA Health Development's acknowledgment program. Periodically evaluate current gift acknowledgment protocols and processes; make recommendations for greater impact and effectiveness and implement improvements. leadership abilities Correspondence -15% » Draft succinct executive-level follow-up correspondence to high-level donors/prospects on behalf of the various UVA Health executive leadership abilities team members to help advance individual donor relationships. Other Targeted Communications/Special Projects - 10% » In partnership with HSD events and communications teams, support event communications needs as appropriate. » Coordinate targeted holiday communications, including creating holiday card messaging and manage print work. » Provide communications skills and collaborate with the Donor Relations team on stewardship initiatives targeted at specific donor constituencies such as planned giving donors, Compass Rose Society members, etc. » Establish and maintain relationships with internal and external Communications partners for project collaborations as needed. Manage freelance hires as needed for specific projects. QUALIFICATIONS: » Bachelor's degree and at least three years of practice in development communications or related work is required » Superior writing, editing and proofreading skills with the capability to tailor written copy to specific audiences while adhering to established University style guidelines. Direct practice with development writing strongly preferred. » capability to translate complex scientific concepts into compelling content that is understandable and accessible to lay audiences » Proven project management and organization skills with capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines » Digital communications skills/practice working in digital communications platforms preferred » High level of initiative and ownership; capability to work independently with minimal supervision » capability to prioritize work and pivot quickly in response to shifting priorities » Highest ethical standards and attention to confidentiality when dealing with donor information » Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong orientation to collaboration and teamwork » capability to work effectively in a complex environment » Thorough expertise of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel. Comfort navigating a CRM database to gather giving, donor data for work product. » Possess a command of cultural sensitivity and value and embrace cultural, political, and social differences. Anticipated hiring range: $55,000 – $63,000 Job location: The UVA Health Development Office operates within a distributed teams model for work, offering a flexible and hybrid work space. All team members must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools. Shared office space is available to staff in Charlottesville, VA. Due to the nature of this position, qualified candidates will be considered for 100% remote work arrangements if desired. Preference will be given to candidates on the East Coast to allow for alignment of business hours. PHYSICAL DEMANDS This is primarily a sedentary job involving broad use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
