SUMMARY
Outward Bound is an international educational movement dedicated to the belief that people are capable of far more than they know. Founded in 1992, the mission of the Philadelphia Outward Bound School (POBS) is to change lives through challenge and discovery. POBS serves PA, NJ, and northern DE, and is one of 11 regional Outward Bound USA schools.
A robust non-profit educational organization, POBS engages thousands of youth and adult participants annually in experiential educational programs that inspire character development, leadership abilities, and community service. All programs, whether single or multi-day, are designed to help participants realize their true potential.
The Associate Director of Human Resources and Culture reports to the Director of Finance and is responsible for supporting a healthy work environment at POBS. They lead efforts to fulfill strategic plan goals for staff development and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and bring innovative ideas to improve working conditions, compensation, benefits, and pathways designed to retain staff. They maintain systems and records for employee certifications, clearances, and evaluations; plan and administer staff trainings; comply with legal requirements required of employers; and seek out best practices to improve the organization and the outdoor experiential education sector.

ESSENTIAL tasks & RESPONSIBILITIES
   » Lead strategic initiatives to improve the POBS workplace, including assessing and restructuring total compensation, increasing number salaried program staff functions, and increasing and supporting diversity within the staff
   » Conduct audit of HR policies to meet best practice guidelines, comply with federal and state legal requirements, and promote sense of belonging and well-being
   » Design and implement comprehensive, continuing workplace training sessions for administrative and field staff with particular focus on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-oppression
   » Provide professional skills and best practice guidelines to support program staff leadership abilities as they develop and implement technical training for field staff
   » Maintain a regular schedule of internal communications to educate employees on staff resources, policies, and procedures
   » Create a culture of equity, support, and appreciation for all POBS employees; measure success through regular administration of employee surveys
   » Administer process improvements for POBS HR tools, including timekeeping and payroll software (Paychex Flex), professional development opportunities, and recruiting
   » Support managers as they conduct comprehensive performance evaluations annually; maintain records of evaluations
   » Investigate and take appropriate action for policy violations and employee performance issues
   » Run bi-monthly payroll and keep accurate records
   » Manage administration of benefits, new employee onboarding, and workers' compensation claims
   » Coordinate with the accounting team on retirement plan administration and filings
   » Be the primary point of contact for benefits brokers and employee insurance; supervise staff enrollment and administration
   » Represent POBS at National Human Resources Team monthly meetings; share learnings and best practices from OBUSA network to improve POBS functions
   » supervise interview process for all positions; assess process (job descriptions and postings, recruitment, application and interview processes, and onboarding) through an equity lens
   » Take point on organizing staff year-end celebration and other staff appreciation and recognition efforts
   » Administer regular equity/workplace culture surveys to all staff
   » Supervise Staffing Manager to provide professional skills and best practice guidelines as they:
   » Recruit, interview, hire, and onboard per diem program staff
   » Draft field staff work agreements
   » Supervise apprentices and per diem program staff

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & expertise
   » expertise of and/or interest in Outward Bound history, mission, pedagogy, and philosophy
   » expertise of HR compliance and administration
   » Commitment to excellence in producing high quality work
   » Highly organized with strong attention to detail
   » capability to self-direct and manage projects with specific goals, measurable results, and deadlines, from start to finish
   » Excellent technology Special Skills: Microsoft Office and Google products, Paychex Flex, Salesforce
   » Compassionate and effective in written and verbal communication
   » Able to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously
   » Sound decision-making judgment
   » Strong personal motivation, initiative, follow through and commitment
   » Thoughtful and discrete in handling confidential and sensitive information

EDUCATION & WORK practice
   » 5+ years practice in nonprofit and/or HR administration
   » SHRM certification or similar training preferred
