Listing description
General Summary
The everyday News Editor supervises news content on air and on ctpublic.org as a content creator and editor. They will edit, write and produce digital stories and radio stories, curate news streams from partners and NPR, create audio and multimedia content, edit the newsroom staff's radio and digital output, and coordinate with our social media team.
Working with the news editors, the everyday News Editor works across the news team to identify, assign and implement everyday coverage for CT Public News. Working with news hosts and reporters, the editor will develop engaging and significant everyday content, while working with newsroom leadership abilities to set and execute overall coverage priorities for CT Public's audience.
Essential Functions
   » Manages everyday newsroom assignments, in conjunction with Senior Editor / News.
   » supervises and manages digital news pages and stories.
   » Edits and improves posts by other News staffers, creating and adding visual and multimedia content wherever possible.
   » Writes, edits, and curates a robust news presence on ctpublic.org.
   » supervises News newsletters, with weekends and night work possible.
   » Plans for everyday radio and digital, in conjunction with Senior Editor News (Morning Edition, All Things Considered, midday newscasts, bizcast, CTPublic.org, our app, NPROne, and social media).
   » Coordinates everyday coverage with the New England News Collaborative (NENC), as well as with external content-sharing partners (CTMirror.org, C-HIT, AP Story Share).
   » Manages the everyday UCB workflow.
   » Works to diversify voices in CT Public news coverage online, and on-air.
   » Carries out most responsibilities in the office, is readily available for collaboration and consultation within the department and across the organization, and fills in with reporting needs as circumstances require.

Responsibilities
Our Editor has many responsibilities. tasks include, but are not limited to:
   » Coordinates with editorial and team leaders on newsletter, digital and linear TV/Radio strategies around each project.
   » Writes, edits, and curates a robust news presence on ctpublic.org.
   » Contributes to CT Public talk shows and Visuals programming.
   » Plans for special coverage opportunities on major upcoming news events.
   » Looks for opportunities to produce quick-turn deep reporting on breaking news situations.
   » Follows CT Public ethics guidelines.
   » Supervises reporters and news editors as assigned.
   » Assists with staff training as needed.
   » Organizes and provides continuing digital training for the news staff.
   » Other tasks as assigned, including on-air fundraising.
Additional tasks may be required.

Knowledge, expertise, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
   » Mission and purpose of CT Public.
   » AP and NPR style.
   » News judgement and an knowledge of how to write for radio about state and New England regional issues and current events.
   » Editing and news tools that support reporting, including Word, Excel, Audition, and Digital editing apps.
   » Microsoft Office applications, including O365suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, Smartsheets and Outlook).

   » Impeccable news judgment and outstanding writing and editing expertise.
   » Telling local journalism with impact and possessing the courage to take on difficult subjects.

Work Environment
Job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work. This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
Physical Demands
T
he physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to prosperously perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to conduct frequent in-person or virtual interactions. Information technology is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods, perform broad data entry and other computer-related tasks, and create/maintain filing systems. Must have close visual acuity to execute an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, close editing, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, or broad reading. The typical physical requirements are: light work-exerting up to 25lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 10lbs of force frequently and may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, income exempt position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Early morning, nights, weekends, and holiday hours might be necessary.
Education and practice
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a similar field AND five (5) or more years of professional journalism practice, with public radio practice preferred AND/OR a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and practice. Strong record of achievement in reporting or editing is preferred.
