Requirements: Workman Publishing's children's department is seeking a creative Designer/Senior Designer who will be responsible for developing innovative non-fiction trade and curriculum books for children. Our books include board books, novelty, middle grade, graphic novels, activity books, and workbooks.
Working with a small, collaborative team of editors and designers, this designer will be responsible for shepherding a list of 10-15 books each year. We ideate many of our projects in-house, so this process includes intensive conceptualizing, artist research and art direction, scheduling, approval, and production. It's a terrific opportunity for a creative designer. The goal of our books is to make learning exciting for kids, and we use design and illustration to create an immersive practice in each book.
Essential tasks: • Work with the art director and editorial team to identify opportunities for new titles • Work with the art director to develop concepts and sample pages, including illustrator research • Design and lay out complex book interiors, including novelty components such as stickers and posters • Work closely with illustrators to create cover and interior artwork within the production schedule • Trouble shoot and problem-solve when necessary to keep books on schedule • Work with the art director, editorial, and sales team to develop cover designs • Manage a list of 10-15 titles per year
Requirements: • At least 4 years of practice, including initial concept generation • BFA in graphic design or a related field • A portfolio showing idea-generation and design-hand-lettering or illustration expertise are a big plus • Idea person who can imagine many possible approaches for a design • Collaborative person with excellent communication expertise • Excellent type expertise are essential • Excellent attention to detail • Proven capability to stick to a schedule and problem-solve
