ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND?  
 
The mission of the Aquarium is to inspire people of all ages to appreciate Long Island Sound, its ecosystem and the global environment through living exhibits, marine science and environmental education. For?more than?33?years, the Aquarium has played a significant function in shaping the landscape of Norwalk and the region. The second largest family attraction in Connecticut,?and 50 miles from New York City,?the Aquarium hosts nearly 500,000 guests annually. Its primary exhibits take guests on a voyage from the shallow salt marshes and estuaries to the depths of the Long Island Sound and the ocean beyond, culminating with habitats for sharks and harbor seals. Altogether, the Aquarium is?home to?more than 7,000 animals and 300 species in 75 exhibits.?A 4D Theater offers a unique sensory film practice for guests.  
 
Its education programs introduce approximately 80,000 students, campers and scouts to marine and STEM?education.?The Aquarium is recognized as a top aquarium in the nation,?and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.?It is an active participant in the local and regional community.?The strength of the Aquarium is its?60?full-time staff,?and?part-time?and seasonal?staff,?in addition to?nearly 300 volunteers, which contribute 28,000 hours annually.
 
While the pandemic challenged the Aquarium in profound ways, the team’s resilience and creativity led to new ways to connect with the community, and renewed optimism for the future. ? 

 
 
The Dive Safety agent (DSO ), working within the animal husbandry team and reporting to the Associate Director of Animal Husbandry, is responsible for the coordination and management of volunteer and staff SCUBA dive operations and training.  The position will also be responsible for creating dive schedules, conducting safety drills, and ensuring compliance with all applicable OSHA, AAUS, and AZA regulations/standards for aquarium and scientific diving.  The DSO will manage and coordinate the volunteer dive team, planning volunteer dives, and ensuring credentials and medical requirements are kept up to date.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
   » Four (4) year degree in the biological sciences or similar discipline preferred.
   » Minimum two (2) years’ practice in a public aquarium husbandry or dive operations position, or significant practice from a comparable setting (university or similar).
   » Must hold a valid certification as an open-water SCUBA instructor for a nationally recognized training agency (GUE, PADI, NAUI, IDEA, SSI, et al.).
   » General expertise of computer databases and Microsoft office suite.
   » Strong command of the English language, both written and verbal.
   » Able to lift a minimum of sixty (60) pounds.
   » Able to negotiate various field conditions.
   » Able to work standing up for extended periods of time.
   » Valid driver’s license required.
   » Valid SCUBA instructor certification with the capability to teach open-water, advanced open-water, rescue diver, first aid/CPR/AED, and oxygen provider classes.
   » capability to work weekends, holidays, days closed due to inclement weather, and to travel for extended periods of time to execute collecting and other tasks.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
   » Schedule volunteer and staff divers for maintenance of exhibits and dive presentations
   » Serve as Chairperson of the Dive Control Board (DCB) and serve on the general Safety Committee.
   » Maintain TMA SCUBA equipment including, but not limited to compressors, regulators, cylinders, full-face masks, buoyancy compensators, wetsuits, drysuits, et cetera.
   » Maintain membership in the Association of Dive Program Administrators (ADPA)
   » Ensure that air samples are regularly taken from the air compressor and sent out to ensure occupational safety.
   » Coordinate with boat captains, vessel staff, husbandry managers, and the conservation and science teams on field collection activities.
   » Other tasks as assigned, including but not limited to field collections, research activities, animal husbandry assistance, animal transports, educational presentations, dive volunteer recruiting, et cetera.
