Requirements: Hay House is seeking an Editor with a strong interest in working with Metaphysical and New Age content to manage 12-14 projects a year for our card deck list. This list includes a variety of metaphysical and personal growth topics including affirmations, angels, astrology, channeling, energetic healing, Law of Attraction, mediumship, oracles, psychics, and tarot.
Reporting to our Editorial Director, you will be responsible for all areas of card deck development and supervise all aspects of the publication process. This includes developmental editing, some acquiring, maintaining relationships with authors, liaising with outside packagers and freelancers as well as our internal design, production, managing editorial, marketing, publicity, and sales departments.
Responsibilities and skills - Manage 12-14 card deck projects per year, including projects acquired personally and projects assigned by manager, editorial director, and publisher. - Develop and maintain relationships with authors/deck creators in order to act as primary contact before, during, and after publication. - Take responsibility for all editorial aspects of each project, including editing and liaising with design, production, marketing, and publicity. - Using industry best practices and in-house resources, write effective copy for covers, fact sheets, design memos, and other marketing copy as required. - Work closely with other in-house editors to discuss conceptual issues, brainstorm processes, workshop copy, and more. - Create P&Ls for new card deck projects. - Perform hands-on work with live design files in InDesign, entering text corrections and coordinating with design department to prepare materials to go to print. - Help establish processes for managing workflow and coordinating with other departments. - Adhere to production schedules and meet deadlines. - Manage editorial freelancers, including developmental/line editors, as needed; coordinate with managing editorial and design departments to manage the work of freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and designers as needed. - Collaborate with colleagues in other HH offices on shared projects.
Skills, expertise & Abilities - Familiarity with the company's core content areas, and strong interest in and/or expertise of current Oracle and Tarot card deck trends-particularly Tarot deck organization and symbolism-and the practice of card-reading. - expertise of book publishing processes and functions (editorial, production, design, copyediting, marketing, sales). - Excellent intra- and interdepartmental communication and collaboration skills with the capability to speak effectively with authors, vendors, customers, and colleagues required. - PC and Mac skills required, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Excel; basic capability in InDesign desired. - Organization, attention to detail, analytic skills, and verbal and written communication skills a must. - Must be highly motivated, a self-starter, able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and work in a fast-paced environment. - Must be results-driven, with the capability to determine and take appropriate steps to achieve goals.
Education and/or practice - 3+ years of significant editorial practice. - Theoretical expertise typically achieved through a related four-year college practice, such as a Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or equivalent.
