Primary Purpose of Department The Department of Biological Sciences is an academic community of scientists and students engaged in advancing the discovery, dissemination, and application of expertise in biological sciences. The Department is guided by the pursuit of excellence in research and education, by a creative and collaborative approach, and by an consciousness of the global context in which the Department exists.

To achieve its vision, the Department of Biological Sciences has set as its mission several inter-related goals:

• To advance the frontiers of expertise through innovation and research in the biological sciences;
• To facilitate development of scientists in the guidance of our bachelors, masters and doctoral Biology students, and in the training of post-doctoral fellows.
• To increase scientific literacy, foster an appreciation of scientific inquiry, and develop well-informed citizens by providing a general education in Biology to the student population;
• To participate in the University-wide academic community through interdisciplinary collaborations, programs and curricula;
• To contribute to local, national, and international scientific communities through collaborations and service activities that promote education and dissemination of information;

Description of Work
Responsible for the everyday operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional tasks requiring leadership abilities and mentoring of faculty, administrative skills to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.
Essential tasks and Responsibilities The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites internal applications for the Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, effective July 1, 2022. income is competitive and commensurate with practice and rank. Candidate requirements include: 1) a doctoral degree in the biological sciences; 2) tenured faculty status at UNC Charlotte with a distinguished record of teaching, scholarly achievement, and externally funded research; 3) demonstrated capability to provide academic leadership abilities in a growing and diverse department within a dynamic urban, public university; 4) practice in administration and leadership abilities of multidisciplinary groups; 5) a demonstrated commitment to promote diversity, equity and inclusion as a value in the department, college, and university.

Minimum practice/Education
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education, Skills and practice The selected candidate will have the capability to supervise the continued advancement, success, and reputation of the Department. They will demonstrate the capability to: 1) creatively and strategically manage the Department's budget; 2) encourage and mentor faculty in securing external grants and in achieving excellence in research, teaching and service; 3) lead and support a large staff whose tasks range from academic administration to technical lab support; 4) sustain the growth, health and success of degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; 5) support interdisciplinary programs and centers; and 6) attract, promote, and retain top-tier, diverse faculty.
