Mural Arts PhiladelphiaMural Arts Philadelphia is the largest public art initiative of its kind, dedicated to the belief that art ignites change. For over 35 years, Mural Arts has united artists and communities through a collaborative and equitable process, creating nearly 4,000 artworks that have transformed public spaces and individual lives. Mural Arts aims to empower people, stimulate dialogue, and build bridges of knowledge with projects that attract artists from Philadelphia and around the world, and programs that focus on youth education, restorative justice, mental health and wellness, environmental justice, and public art and its preservation. Mural Arts also supports and collaborates with artists who work in a variety of media, including visual, new media, performance-located, literary, and cross-disciplinary arts. Not only do we want to ensure that we work with a diverse pool of artists, we also want to provide learning opportunities for artists and for project managers. And as the custodians of the largest outdoor gallery in the country, the popular mural tours offer a firsthand glimpse into the inspiring stories behind Mural Arts' iconic and unparalleled collection, which has earned Philadelphia worldwide recognition as the ?City of Murals.?Mural Arts is creating a new grant funded 18 month position. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Artist Relations Director will be Somebody with leadership abilities practice, with a history of collaborating with and advancing opportunities for artists of color, and with systems design and management capabilities. Initially this individual will work with Yancey Consulting, who has been contracted to lead and facilitate a broad group of artists, staff, and collaborators, with the purpose of creating a plan that will identify a range of pathways for artists of varying practice, which will lead to sustainable work with Mural Arts, the creation of a broad network for artists, and continued opportunities in career advancement and training. The Artist Relations Director will not only be building out systems to identify and recruit artists in public space, they will also be working with MAP staff to create internships and apprenticeships, workshops, training programs, supportive technology, and continuing collaborations. Additionally, they will identify needs amongst the project managers to make sure project managers are continually growing and learning in their functions as leaders in projects with artists of all backgrounds and levels. Job Responsibilities Ensuring rapid implementation of the Yancey Consulting plan For the first six months, the director will focus on learning about the work, building relationships, and participating in and helping lead Yancey Consulting's process. Once the plan is adopted by the Board and Executive Team, the director will be empowered to advance recommendations and supervise expenditures relating to the work. Responsibilities may include (to be identified and finalized from results from the process): Bring an anti-racist lens to developing and managing artist systems and prioritize advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and access (DEIA) in how Mural Arts recruits, develops, and retains artists Streamline and manage artists' RFPs and RFQs to better serve artists and projects Develop and manage centralized policies and practices pertaining to artist selection and advancement Build, maintain, and support consistent utilization of a central database of artists Develop regional and multidisciplinary connections to artists Coordinate learning and professional development opportunities for artists and artistic personnel across departments Develop and maintain strategic educational partnerships and opportunities to advance the professional skills of artists Serve as an ambassador to artists and arts leaders regionally and nationally Attend professional conferences and organize presentations and other materials for print and/or online Advocate for artists' needs and interests in internal decision-making processes Clarify pipelines for artists and facilitate movement through the pipeline Qualifications Include Knowledge of the artist community in Philadelphia and beyond Intellectual agility and an open curious mind combined with a passion for the arts and working with contemporary artists practice mentoring and collaborating with diverse staff Proven track record of upholding DEIA values.
